Camp at Palladia Farm is a great way for children to begin or continue their equine education both on and off the horse. Learn safety zones around a horse and at the farm, develop basic horsemanship and equine caretaking abilities, and practice your riding skills while mounted atop one of our safe, experienced school horses. This page contains basic information about camp, as well as links to a Downloadable Camp Registration Form and our Liability Waiver.

Each camp session includes no more than six students, so that each can develop an individual relationship with our horses and instructors. While under constant supervision, each student learns to safely halter, lead, and groom a horse. Beginning riders will be shown how to put a bridle and saddle on the horse, how to mount safely, and how to navigate the ring at a walk and trot. More advanced students will learn how to recognize and treat common ailments, how to clean and assemble tack, and will practice their riding skills at the walk, trot, canter, and over low jumps if appropriate.
Each day there will be a fun session in our climate controlled clubroom and barn aisle, the focus of which will be learning more about our equine friends, including how to recognize breeds, colors, and different styles of riding. At Palladia Farm, we value the individuality and creativity of every child. To this end, we also offer time for arts and crafts, allowing the students to relax and pursue projects that appeal to their individual sensibilities. Other activities include scavenger hunts, tractor rides, playing with the dogs, cats, and horses, and miscellaneous fun around the barn.
Camp runs from 9:00am until noon each day. Please pick your child up no later than 30 minutes after his or her session ends.
Three-day camps--Thanksgiving Camp and Winter Camp I--cost $200. Four-day camps--all summer sessions and Winter Camp II--cost $300. A 50% deposit is required to hold your child's spot. The remaining 50% is due on the first day of the session. While deposits are non-refundable, we will make every effort to accommodate your needs should your plans change.
Camp is open to children who are five to twelve years old. Older or younger children and adults should sign up for our Riding School or for a private lesson with one of our trainers.
Long Pants. Either heavy jeans or special riding pants called "breeches" or "jodhpurs." Thin or baggy pants quickly bunch up between the child's leg and the saddle, creating painful rubs. Special riding pants are designed to avoid this discomfort. Many riders prefer the added protection and grip provided by wearing chaps or half-chaps over their breeches or jodhpurs. You can find jodhpurs at Dover Saddlery ($40) and many other stores, as well as locally at Ann Hubbard's Tack Shop, phone: (847) 234-7080, located on Route 43 between 176 and 137 in Lake Bluff; or at the Libertyville Tack Shop, phone: (847) 362-0570, just west of Milwaukee Rd., on route 137 in Libertyville.
A shoe with a low, square heel. Paddock boots, designed especially for equine activities, provide the best protection for the feet as well as the most comfort while riding. They can be obtained relatively inexpensively from many online stores. You can find paddock boots at Dover Saddlery ($45), or paddock boots at Ann Hubbard's Tack Shop, and the Libertyville Tack Shop.
A properly fitting, ASTM/SEI approved riding helmet. The safety of your child is our number one priority. The better a helmet fits your child, the more protection he or she has in the event of a fall from the horse. As ASTM/SEI approved helmets can now be purchased for as little as $40, they are readily available to all riders. You can find ASTM/SEI approved helmets at Dover Saddlery and other venues online, at Ann Hubbard's Tack Shop, and at the Libertyville Tack Shop.
Yes! Please have your child bring a healthy snack and two bottles of water each day. Refrigeration is available.
