What about just taking a 30-minute riding lesson?

If you ask a lifetime horse-lover what got her hooked on the sport, she is unlikely to tell you it was winning ribbons at horse shows or perfecting a particular riding technique. Instead, you will probably hear something like "I love working with horses; they are amazing animals." Or "I always loved the barn--it was the place where I first developed a sense of who I am, and what's important to me as a person." Maybe you will hear a story about a particular horse, and how it transformed the life of its rider.

At most barns, riding school students take one or two 30-minute lessons a week. They may learn how to trot and canter and maybe even jump a small course, but they know next to nothing about the animals they ride. What do horses eat? How can you tell if a horse is distressed? How do you treat common injuries and illnesses? How do you groom a horse, put on its bridle and saddle, and identify whether the tack is correctly adjusted and safe to use?

At Palladia Farm, we see little point in developing riders who cannot answer these basic questions. There seems to be a lack of integrity in this fractured understanding of our sport. What is truly tragic, however, is all the opportunities to love and appreciate horses and horseback riding that are lost with the 30-minute lesson program.

The Palladia Farm Riding School was developed in response to these concerns; we strive to develop well-rounded and well-informed horsepeople of all ages, as well as competent riders. We treat our horses well, and expect the same from our riders.
